Executive Advisor for Diversity Partnerships
Mr. Hopson has a history of success working for and in large school systems and has a strong influence across the country as an advocate for education. As Executive Advisor for Diversity Partnerships, Mr. Hopson will support the HES operations team and will routinely meet with local area service providers, as
well as HES and district officials, to ensure the minority business enterprise commitment is being upheld by both HES and its sub-contractors.
Mr. Hopson served as the Superintendent of the Shelby County Schools, the nation’s 25th largest school district. He received his Bachelor of Arts (with honors) from the University of Memphis. He then attended Georgia State University College of Law. Hopson graduated Magna Cum Laude from Georgia State University in 1998.
In April 2008, the Board of Education for Memphis City Schools named Mr. Hopson as its General Counsel. As General Counsel, Hopson provided legal and strategic advice to the district’s leadership team. Under his direction, Memphis City Schools was awarded a $57.4 million judgment against the City of Memphis in a landmark case involving educational funding.
In 2013, the Shelby County Board of Education named Mr. Hopson the first Superintendent of the newly merged Shelby County Schools, where he successfully managed the largest school merger in U.S. history. Under his leadership, SCS significantly improved its academic outcomes, community engagement and business operations. Mr. Hopson has a deep passion for education, wellness, and the law. He strongly believes that every child can learn, and that education is the great equalizer.
